When Darrin Meyer was attending Sidney St. Patrick’s School, he was considered a quiet, laid-back kid.

His classmates probably never dreamed what he would be doing now.

Today, Meyer, who graduated from St. Pat’s in 1989 and now lives in Lincoln, is considered one of the hottest comedians in the area. He will bring his stand-up routine in which he skewers politics, sports, relationships, and many “other ironies of life,” to the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce annual awards banquet Friday.

It will be the second consecutive year that the Chamber has used home-grown talent to provide the entertainment at its banquet. In 2004, Wendall Gaston, by profession a pharmacist, but by avocation a motivational speaker, was featured.

Meyer will definitely entertain his audience Friday. He showed his comedic style last summer when he was featured speaker when the Sidney Volunteer Firemen had their annual banquet. His classmates, who had gathered for a class reunion, also heard a side of their old school mate they probably had not seen before.

He has performed from St. Louis, MO to Portland, OR, and from Erie, PA to Tucson. He has shared the billing with comedians from “Weird Al” Yankovic to Pauly Shore and has worked before audiences in almost 40 states. He has also done movie work, and been on radio and television.

Also expected to attend the chamber banquet, to be at the Sidney Holiday Inn, is the new governor of Nebraska, Dave Heineman. He should assume the office this week when Gov. Mike Johanns is confirmed as the new Secretary of Agriculture. Heineman, who has been lieutenant governor since 1998, will automatically become the governor, and Friday could be his first full day as the state’s chief executive office.
